  Driver License Renewals
Renewing Your Driver License

If you are a United States citizen, who is under 65 years of age, you may obtain a five-year driver’s license if you meet the requirements and renew through the mail.  If you renew your driver’s license in a DMV office you will receive a ten-year driver's license.

If you are a United States citizen who is 65 years of age or older you are only eligible for a five year credential regardless of whether it is renewed through a DMV field office or the mail.

Renewing an Expired Driver’s License

No one should operate a vehicle of any kind with an expired driver’s license.  These are the requirements to renew an expired driver’s license. 

·         If you wish to renew the driver’s license and it is LESS than nine months from the expiration date on the license the renewal process is the same as if it was not expired.  You are NOT required to take a knowledge test, or a skills test, or present additional documentation.

 

·         If your driver’s license is expired MORE than nine months from the expiration date on the license than you MUST:

o      successfully pass a knowledge test; and

o      successfully take a skills test; and

o      present proof of residency document; and 

o      be prepared to present proof of identity and proof of social security number only if DMV is not able to locate these source documents in their system.

Renewal By Mail

You are eligible to renew your driver's license by mail for a five-year driver’s license if you meet the following requirements:

1.     You are a United States citizen. (For information about International customer requirements, click here.) 

2.     Your driver's license has not been expired more than nine months.

3.     You have not received violations totaling more than five points in the last two years.

4.     Your license is not suspended or subject to be suspended.

5.     You did not renew your license by mail or online during the previous renewal period.

6.     You do not have a commercial license.

7.     You are not identified as a Convicted Violent Offender in our system.

8.   A report of vision screening must be completed within the last 12 months from a licensed eye care professional.

 

You must complete Form DL-63 and mail it to DMV along with the following items:

 

1. A check or money order made payable to "SCDMV" for the appropriate fee: 

 

·         $12.50 for a driver’s license without a Veteran designation on it; or 

·         $13.50 for Veterans of the US Armed Forces who added the $1.00 VETERAN designation to their credential in a field office.

 

2. A report of vision screening completed within the last 12 months from a licensed eye care professional.

Renewal in a DMV Office

If you are a United States citizen, you may visit your local DMV office to renew your license. You will be issued a ten-year license if you are under the age of 65. If you are 65 or older, you will be issued a five-year license. For information about International customer requirements, click here. 

To renew your South Carolina driver’s license in a DMV branch office:

1.     You must pass a vision-screening test or provide an eye examination certificate obtained within the last 12 months from a licensed optometrist or ophthalmologist.

2.     You must provide your vehicle insurance information.

3.     You must pass a knowledge test if you received violations totaling more than five points against your driving record in the last two years. 

4.     Persons under the age of 65 can renew their license every ten years if they appear in person at a DMV office to process their renewal.  Ten-year driver's licenses will not be issued by mail.

5.     Persons who are 65 years of age or older must renew their driver license every five years

6.  The fee for a 10-year renewal is $25.00.  The 5-year renewal fee is $12.50.

Online Driver's License Renewals

The Department of Motor Vehicles may no longer renew your driver’s license online due to a clause in South Carolina law that requires customers to submit to a vision screening or present a certificate of eye examination as part of the renewal process.

If you are not a United States citizen, you must renew your license at one of the seventeen designated DMV offices as noted below that process international customer’s applications:

The requirements to renew a driver's license for an International customer are as follows:

1.     You must pass a vision-screening test or provide an eye examination certificate obtained within the last 12 months from a licensed eye care professional.

2.     You must pass a knowledge test if you received violations totaling more than five points against your driving record in the last two years. 

3.     The renewal fee for a 5-year (or less) license is $12.50.

4.     Provide proper documentation. Form MV-94 International Customer Checklist for Issuance of Driver’s License, Beginner’s Permit and Identification Cards lists the documentation requirements for each of the areas listed below for the most common immigration and visa statuses.

§  Proof of Identity (SC Code Section 56-1-80 and 56-1-90(2))

§  Proof of Date and Place of Birth (SC Code Section 56-1-80 and 56-1-90(2))

§  Current authorization to live, work or study in the U.S. (SC Code Section 56-1-40(7) and 56-1-80)

§  Social Security Card or Letter from the Social Security Administration (no more than 90 days old) stating that the applicant is not allowed to work in the United States (SC Code Section 56-1-90)

§  Proof of SC Residency (SC Code Section 56-1-40(7) and Section 56-1-80(3))

     §  Automobile Liability Insurance Information (SC Code Section 56-1-80(C))
