Privacy Policy

South Carolina state and federal laws dictate that motor vehicle and driver license records maintained by the SC DMV can be disclosed in certain situations. The Driver Privacy Protection Act (DPPA) keeps your personal information private by placing limits on purposes for which the information can be obtained.

Your motor vehicle and driver license records include information such as your social security number, driver license number, address, phone number and medical or disability information. The DPPA limits access to this information.

Information not protected by the DPPA includes car accident reports, traffic tickets, and your current driver license status. This information is not considered personal information.

Specific organizations, businesses, individual people, and government agencies will have access to the information deemed personal for limited use and for very specific purposes.

DMV will provide additional information on our privacy policy if requested. If you have further questions, comments, or complaints about the DMV's privacy policy or policy compliance, you may contact the DMV Privacy Office at
