On October 19, 2010, SCDMV began issuing new driver license and identification card credentials. The new credentials, which are more tamper resistant and designed to deter fraud, are now available in every DMV office.
The new credential has three levels of security to protect the integrity of the card. While the appearance of the credential has changed, the requirements and fees have not changed. You do not need to replace your current driver’s license or identification card until it expires. Once you are issued a new credential, however, you cannot change back to the old credential.
