Myrtle Beach DMV Parking Lot Construction:

The South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles (SCDMV) Myrtle Beach office is currently making improvements to the parking lot and other paved areas of the property. Improvements will include additional parking spaces, a new motorcycle testing course and a new parallel parking area for driver skills testing. For more information, click here. 

 

Out of Business Dealerships:      

If you purchased a vehicle from an automobile dealership that has closed and you have not received your vehicle registration and license plate, you may contact the SCDMV Dealer Licensing Unit for assistance at (803) 896-2611. To obtain your vehicle registration, you must first complete a Form DLA-5, Dealer Complaint Form and submit it to the Dealer Licensing Unit.

 

Real ID in South Carolina: As the deadline for states to apply for the fedral Real ID extension approaches, many South Carolina citizens question how Real ID will affect them as individuals. Please click here for more information.

 

Beaufort DMV Office Renovations: SCDMV will temporarily close its Beaufort office at 29 Munch Drive to renovate and expand the facility. The office will close on Friday, March 7 and reopen temporarily at 11J Robert Smalls Parkway in Beaufort Plaza on Monday, March 10. For more information, click here.

 

SCDMV Provides Used Plates To National Guard: Representatives from SCDMV will visit the Mt. Pleasant Army National Guard today to deliver used South Carolina license plates requested by soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. The plates, which were slated for the recycle bin, will be mounted on National Guard humvees and other military vehicles. For more information, click here.

 

Four New License Plates Available: SCDMV announced today the availability of four new speciality license plates. The Boy Scouts of America, The National Multiple Sclerosis Society, the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc, and the Surfrider Foundation license plates are now available in SCDMV offices across the state. Citizens Urged To Correct Addresses With SCDMV: SCDMV encourages residents who have changed addresses within the past five years to update their information in SCDMV records. For more information, click here.

 

Three New License Plates Available: SCDMV announced today the availability of three new specialty license plates. The Support Our Troops, the Ancient Free Masons, and the Handicapped Disabled Veterans license plates are now available in SCDMV offices across the state. For more information, click here.

 

SCDMV Pageland Office Closing: SCDMV announced on November 16, 2007 that the Pageland field office will close as of December 1, 2007. The office, located in Chesterfield County, currently operates one day a week. For more information, click here.

 

PDPS and CDLIS System Checks: Beginning October 1, 2007, SCDMV will run automatic checks against the Problem Driver Pointer System (PDPS) and the Commercial Driver License Information System (CDLIS) databases to check your prior driving history in other states. The checks are performed when a customer applies for an original credential, renews a credential, is reexamined or moves from a beginner permit to a license. They are designed to insure drivers have only one valid license at a time. For more information, click here.

 

SCDMV Begins Issuing Digital License Plates: SCDMV announced on September 18, 2007 the issuance of the first digitally produced license plates in South Carolina. The regular "Smiling Faces Beautiful Places" license plate is the first license plate to be produced as a flat, digital plate. While the design remains the same, the numbers and letters on the new plates are not embossed. For more information, click here

 

Pembina Nation License Plate: Recently, WIS-TV produced a news report regarding Pembina Nation Little Shell license plates in South Carolina. These license plates are not valid. South Carolina law requires residents who operate motor vehicles on the streets or highways of this state to obtain a license plate issued by or through the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles. In addition, vehicle owners must pay personal vehicle property taxes and obtain automobile insurance before a license plate and registration can be issued or renewed. New License Plate Design Winner Announced: SCDMV announced the winner of the South Carolina license plate design competition. The winning plate, designed by Matthew Kamann of Mt. Pleasant, features a dark blue palmetto tree and crescent moon against the sunrise. The plate slogan, developed by the South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism, invites visitors with a new tourism Web address at www.travel2SC.com. New Driven by the Arts Plate: The South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles (SCDMV) began issuing the new Driven by the Arts plate on August 1. The plates are available at any SCDMV field office. To view the new plate, click here.

 

Commercial Driver Credential: Beginning June 5, 2007, applicants applying for a commercial driver credential of any type must provide information regarding any previous out-of-state drivers’ licenses. These transactions include the following:

·         Obtaining a beginner’s permit,

·         Transferring an out-of-state commercial license to South Carolina,

·         Moving from a beginner’s permit to a first-time commercial license,

·         Renewing a commercial license or permit, and

·         Upgrading or downgrading a commercial license class or endorsement.

Division of Motor Vehicle Hearings Effective January 1, 2006, the duties and functions of the SCDMV Administrative Hearing Office moved to the SC Administrative Law Court as the Division of Motor Vehicle Hearings.
